3 Things You Should Know Before Buying Peel-and-Stick Flooring

As you know, installing floors during a flip renovation can be a time consuming and expensive process—whether they’re hardwoods, natural stone, porcelain, or ceramic planks. Peel-and-stick flooring can be a relatively quick, inexpensive, and easy alternative for areas inside your property, since the planks—or tiles—are applied over the subfloor much like wallpaper, but thicker of course.

Peel-and-stick flooring, also referred to as vinyl plank flooring, comes in a variety of styles and patterns. But before you invest in it here are some things you should know.

The Cost of Installation

You may be able to install peel-and-stick flooring yourself, but if you choose to have it professionally installed the cost will depend on its quality and style. Prices may range from $1 to $5 per square foot. So a 300-square-foot space will cost between $300 and $1,500.

The Best and Worst Places to Install

Peel-and-stick flooring can be great for areas in your flip where you may not want to invest a whole lot of money. It’s durable and pretty water-resistant, too, so it can work well in places like laundry rooms or in kids’ craft areas and multi-purpose spaces—but you should avoid areas where there is heavy splash, like bathrooms and kitchens. Also, high-traffic areas like entryways aren’t the best places to lay peel-and-stick.

The Lifespan

The average lifespan of peel-and-stick flooring can range from five to 25 years based on three factors: how well it’s installed, the amount of foot traffic it receives, and if it’s frequently exposed to water.

For a quality installation, your subfloor should be in good condition and be totally even before the peel-and-stick is applied.

Although some peel-and-stick flooring is made to withstand frequent exposure to water, it typically lasts longer if it’s not often exposed to heavy moisture.
